Scientist for the University of Illinois had designed and developed a 3D nano structure which make the battery capable of recharging mobile phones and other portable electronic goods in seconds or within minutes.

According to the journal Nature Nanotechnology reports, Paul Braun's group at Illinois developed the nanostructure for battery cathodes that allows for dramatically faster charging and discharging without sacrificing energy storage capacity.

A new process for storing and generating hydrogen to run fuel cells in cars has been invented by chemical engineers at Purdue University.

The process, given the name hydrothermolysis, uses a powdered chemical called ammonia borane, which has one of the highest hydrogen contents of all solid materials, said Arvind Varma, R. Games Slayter Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering and head of the School of Chemical Engineering.

"This is the first process to provide exceptionally high hydrogen yield values at near the fuel-cell operating temperatures without using a catalyst, making it promising for hydrogen-powered vehicles," he said. "We have a proof of concept."

The new process combines hydrolysis and thermolysis, two hydrogen-generating processes that are not practical by themselves for vehicle applications.

An electric car in Japan has reportedly set a new world record by running for over 27 hours and covering more than 1,000 kilometres on a single charge.

The red and white Mira EV, fitted with special lithium ion battery created by Japanese company Sanyo, travelled at a speed of 40 kilometre per hour, as it drove non-stop around a car racing course in Shimotsuma for 27.5 hours covering 1,003 km without being recharged, 'The Daily Telegraph' reported.

A total of 17 different people took turns at the wheel of the electric car as it circled repeatedly around the race course during the experiment.

The test run was organised by the Japan Electric Vehicle Club which plans to request the Guinness World Records to officially recognise it as the world's longest electric car journey, the British newspaper quoted Japanese media reports.
