It takes longer to read books on a Kindle 2 or an iPad versus a printed book, Jakob Nielsen of product development consultancy Nielsen Norman Group discovered in a recent usability survey.
The study found that reading speeds declined by 6.2% on the iPad and 10.7% on the Kindle compared to print. However, Nielsen conceded that the differences in reading speed between the two devices were not “statistically significant because of the data’s fairly high variability” — in other words, the study did not prove that the iPad allowed for faster reading than the Kindle.

FBI officials confirmed Thursday that the bureau has opened an investigation into data breaches involving AT&T and Apple's recently released iPad.
"The FBI is aware of these possible computer intrusions and has opened an investigation to address the potential cyber threat," said Special Agent Jason Pack, an FBI spokesman.
The investigation is being overseen by agents from the FBI's Washington field office, according to FBI officials.
Some high-profile government officials are known to use the iPad and it is possible government e-mail addresses may have been compromised.

The result was a glitzy who's who list of iPad early adopters, which includes major political figures, military officials and top politicians. Rahm Emanuel, the chief of staff for President Obama, was among the iPad users whose e-mail address was exposed, according to Gawker. Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein and New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg were also on the hit list.

Calling it the "most exclusive e-mail list on the planet," Gawker said the list of exposed owners included New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel and other powerful figures in finance, media and politics.
The security hole was uncovered by Goatse Security, a group known among security experts as hackers who enjoy pulling Web pranks, Gawker reported. Still, the group previously has uncovered flaws in browsers Firefox and Safari, Gawker said.

During a procedure at Kobe University's hospital, the unnamed doctor used the device to zoom in and out of medical images and video.
It's not clear whether they were pre-downloaded pics being displayed in the iPhotos app, or whether it'd been hacked to run custom software, but the pinch-to-zoom functionality is intact, despite the user wearing latex surgical gloves.
In fact, for sterilisation purposes, the entire gadget was wrapped in cling-film.

The approach — which Adobe does not describe in any detail — apparently does exactly what what was intended with a compiler that Wired magazine was initially employing to create its June issue for the iPad, or more accurately, the reader or “wrapper” for the content which combined are the app. (Both Wired.com and Wired magazine are owned by Condé Nast.)

(Reuters) - Britain and Europe are the world's costliest places to buy Apple Inc's new iPad computer, with prices around a quarter higher than in the United States, a new study has found.
"In the UK, Germany, France and Italy an iPad costs 20-25 per cent more than in the U.S.," said Craig James, chief economist at the CommSec share trading division of Australia's Commonwealth Bank.
"The question is whether Apple has priced its product too high for the European market, or whether the UK pound and euro need to depreciate further to bring global pricing into line."
CommSec's index is a modern variation on the long-running Big Mac index compiled by The Economist magazine and compares the price of iPads in 10 countries, including Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Britain, Japan, Australia and Canada.

Apple is selling more than 200,000 iPads per week, says Mike Abramsky, an RBC Capital Markets analyst. That's almost twice the rate of Mac computers, which average about 110,000 units sold each week.
The iPad isn't outselling the iPhone, though it's coming close. Apple was selling about 246,000 units of the iPhone 3GS per week during its first quarter of launch.

Apple has announced that its iPad tablet computer will go on sale in nine countries outside the US on 28 May.
The new markets are Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK.
The cheapest model will retail at £429 in the UK. The same version in the US costs $499 (£337).
Part of the difference in price is due to British VAT and US sales tax. The same model before tax costs £37 ($55) more in the UK.
The consumer gadget was launched in the US domestic market on 3 April, but Apple had to delay deliveries to international consumers.
