This is what i call economy Mapping (Aerial).
Grassroots Mapping, a project born out of MIT fellow Jeffrey Yoo Warren, is seeking to photograph and "map" the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.
Their project seeks to come up with cheap and easy to find tools for aerial photography.
Their newest project is using cameras attached to kites to photograph the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in order to assess the damage and help along the response to it.
The Gulf mapping project got under way on May 5th, and the project is now accepting donations to help fund its research.

Forrester Research is out with a report this morning projecting that tablets will start outselling netbooks by 2012.
- US consumers will buy more PCs in 2015 than they do in 2010.
- Growth will come from new form factors like tablets, but laptop sales will increase steadily also.
- Tablets will cannibalize netbooks, outselling netbooks starting in 2012.
- In 2015, 23% of all PCs sold to consumers in the US will be tablets.
- Desktops aren’t dead. Fewer desktops will be sold in 2015 than in 2010, but in 2015, they’ll still be used by more consumers than any other type of PC.

A website that helps people to work out how much CO2 is being emitted to heat water in their homes has gone online.
Produced by the Energy Saving Trust (EST), it also suggests ways that users can save water and energy, as well as cutting their carbon footprint.
The Trust says CO2 from energy used to heat water in UK homes accounts for 5% of the nation's total carbon emissions.
Yet, it adds, water use is the "forgotten energy saving opportunity" by homes, businesses and policymakers.
The EST produced the calculator as an interactive, "easy to understand" tool for people to make the link between water efficiency and energy efficiency, explained Andrew Tucker, EST's water strategy manager.
Energy used in the UK water sector accounts for about 6% of the nation's total CO2 emissions, 89% of which is a result of homes and businesses heating the water.
Figures from the Trust estimate that heating water accounts for about 30% of the average household's energy bills.

Cool about the 3DS is its 3D slider — a small toggle on the right side of the device that allows you to seamlessly “zoom” up to higher levels of 3D all the way from regular old flat 2D. Not only is the visual transition itself impressive, but the option to play any of your favorite titles at various 3D depth levels.

Sysmos found that the Twitter followers of social media heavyweights were the most influential of the bunch and followers of celebrities by contrast, have little to no authority.
As the table above shows, most users following these celebrities have a very low authority ranking, partly because they have few followers themselves. Britney Spears has particularly low authority followers, whereas Barack Obama stands out within the three groups with followers who have an average authority ranking of 2.4.
Celebrities
Celebrities seem to have large amounts of followers with low Twitter authority levels. This could be because they attract everyone from all walks of life. Some people may only be on Twitter to see what their favorite stars have to tweet about.

Originally acquired by AOL for $850 million back in 2008, Bebo has clearly been a colossal flop for AOL, and as the company refocuses on content, makes little sense strategically. Along those same lines, AOL unloaded ICQ to DST a little over a month ago.
The buyer of Bebo is said to be Criterion Capital Partners, a hedge fund.
The Internet company has been publicly looking for an acquirer for some time, and in April, news leaked that AOL would likely shut down the site if a buyer was not found.

YouTube has just released a new video editor that lets you create video mashups and edit down clips from your library of existing video uploads. The feature should be rolled out to all YouTube users by the end of the day.
The new service enables you to edit together separate clips, as well as add or change the background music using YouTube’s commercial AudioSwap library of licensed songs. As of right now, the service and its features are pretty basic, but could prove valuable for users that either want to create longer montages or playlists, or do basic editing jobs.

Two parts of the button have translation features,

Firstly the button itself and the pop-up you get when you click to do the retweet are now translated into 7 languages English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Japanese and Portuguese. We will then be putting up an area to crowd source the translations to other languages.
Secondly we have integrated Google Translate to automatically translate any stories you retweet into your own language. This automatically detects if translation is required and prompts you when it has made the change, it is a simple one-click to revert the translation if that is not what you desire.

A Tokyo University team has developed a robot designed to simulate the development and behaviour of a nine-month-old baby in an effort to better understand how humans grow.
The robot was created by the team led by Yasuo Kuniyoshi, a professor at the Tokyo University. Professor Kuniyoshi plans to study the data acquired from the sensors and cameras attached to the robot to find out how a baby reacts to the environment and the process by which it develops curiosity about new objects.

In a statement, Apple said:
Yesterday Apple and its carrier partners took pre-orders for more than 600,000 of Apple's new iPhone 4. It was the largest number of pre-orders Apple has ever taken in a single day and was far higher than we anticipated, resulting in many order and approval system malfunctions.
Many customers were turned away or abandoned the process in frustration. We apologize to everyone who encountered difficulties, and hope that they will try again or visit an Apple or carrier store once the iPhone 4 is in stock.
Hydrogen fuel cell cars new storing and generating mechanism is being generated.

A new process for storing and generating hydrogen to run fuel cells in cars has been invented by chemical engineers at Purdue University.
The process, given the name hydrothermolysis, uses a powdered chemical called ammonia borane, which has one of the highest hydrogen contents of all solid materials, said Arvind Varma, R. Games Slayter Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering and head of the School of Chemical Engineering.
"This is the first process to provide exceptionally high hydrogen yield values at near the fuel-cell operating temperatures without using a catalyst, making it promising for hydrogen-powered vehicles," he said. "We have a proof of concept."
The new process combines hydrolysis and thermolysis, two hydrogen-generating processes that are not practical by themselves for vehicle applications.

It is the picture that confirms Japan's Ikaros solar sail is fully extended and ready for the next part of its mission.
The image was acquired by a tiny camera ejected from the central hub of Ikaros.
It transmitted the picture back to the central hub of the spacecraft, which then relayed the data many millions of kilometres to Earth.
Ikaros will demonstrate the principle of solar sailing, which has long been touted as a means of moving spacecraft around the Solar System.

An iPhone application that mimics the blasting of the African trumpet, however, has been downloaded more than a million times.
The app was designed by a Dutch duo. The Dutch have been the most vociferous in their disdain for the cacophonous horn, with coach Bert van Marwijk banning them from his team's training sessions and Dutch striker Robin van Persie blaming vuvuzelas on his inability to hear a referee's whistle.
"It's the Vuvuzela jackpot," said Jeroen Retrae, co-designer of the iVuvuzela at http://moblio.nl/
After gaining only a few thousand downloads since its launch eight months ago, downloads exploded after the start of the tournament, mostly from the United Kingdom, Germany and France.

Replacing white rice with brown rice and wholemeal bread could cut the risk of diabetes by a third, US experts say.
White rice poses a diabetes threat because it causes steep rises in blood sugar, say Harvard researchers in Archives of Internal Medicine.
Brown rice and other wholegrain foods are a healthier option as they release glucose more gradually, they say.
The study is based on questionnaires; some say the data is not robust enough to base firm conclusions on.

The online encyclopaedia Wikipedia says it has taken an "important step" towards making it easier to edit some of its most controversial articles.
Up to 2,000 articles, including a page about former US President George W Bush, will have their strict editing restrictions relaxed.
Users will now be able to submit changes to the selected pages for review by senior editors.
