Imagine a pickpocket trying to steal your wallet but getting a 220-volt jolt! Wearing a special pair of jeans - designed by a Varanasi school dropout using basic scientific principles - might just help avoid a hole in your pocket.

The jeans has been designed by Shyam Chaurasia, a resident of Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi district. That's not all, with slight modifications, according to him, you can make all your garments "power-packed".

"You just need to fit a small battery-operated kit in the garment that you want to make power-packed," Chaurasia, 21, told IANS. Varanasi is around 300 km from Lucknow.

Angry over the removal of certain Islamic pages from Facebook, more than 2.5 million Muslim users are likely to quit the social networking website, according to a media report.

Following the removal of four extremely popular Islamic pages from the website, the Muslim community has expressed anger and a template letter that has been pasted into numerous Facebook pages accused the website's founder Mark Zuckerberg of "ignoring the feelings of more than 2.5 million Muslims", the Daily Mail reported.

The letter reads: "Although you have attended the world's best communication skills courses you have been most successful in growing great hatred and hostility between you and Muslims around the world, but seriously this time you have caused an almost unrepairable [sic] damage."

Google CFO Patrick Pichette made an startling revelation during a conference call discussing Google’s second quarter earnings today: It “invested” $100 million defending YouTube against Viacom’s $1 billion lawsuit.

Virgin and publishing company Seven Squared are planning to launch a new consumer magazine that will be available exclusively as an app for iPad, iPhone and eventually Android devices, according to AdAge.

The magazine, titled Maverick, will reportedly focus on the entrepreneurial space, highlighting “new creative, business, travel and technology ideas” to an “upscale international audience,” a la Fast Company and WIRED. Consultancy AI will oversee the magazine’s creative duties.

Maverick is tentatively scheduled to launch in October — if Holly Branson, the 28-year old daughter of Virgin’s Founder and Chairman Sir Richard Branson, can persuade enough premium advertisers to sign up by then. According to an executive “close to the matter,” response has been so positive that the title may very well be able to choose which brands it will sign for the first round of advertising contracts.

Google has launched a new website to centralize its efforts to build an ultra high-speed fiber optic Internet network, better known as Google Fiber.

Earlier this year, Google announced its plan to build a high-speed network, delivering connection speeds 100 times faster than typical U.S. connections. The announcement produced a frenzy of interest: 600+ communities applied to become ground zero for Google’s experimental high-speed network. Topeka, Kansas even changed its name to Google, Kansas in order to win the contract.

The search giant is once again moving forward with its fiber network plans. It announced the launch of Google Fiber for Communities, a simple and straightforward homepage for the project, complete with videos, an FAQ, suggestions for how to take action, and a full list of the communities that have requested more information on Google Fiber.

AVX Aircraft Company of Texas, in response to the same DARPA research project that has spawned the Marines' flying machine, has developed a design for a flying SUV. Called the Transformer, it is said to have the capability to drive on roads at a mere 80 mph, on rough terrain at 30 mph, and fly at around 140 mph.

It is also designed to go 250 miles on just one tank of fuel. And it takes just 60 seconds to convert it from SUV to flying SUV.

A new research by Medical College of Georgia has shown that black tea contains higher concentrations of fluoride than previously thought.

"The additional fluoride from drinking two to four cups of tea a day won't harm anyone; it's the very heavy tea drinkers who could get in trouble," said Dr. Gary Whitford, Regents Professor of oral biology in the School of Dentistry.

Most published reports show 1 to 5 milligrams of fluoride per litre of black tea, but a new study shows that number could be as high as 9 milligrams.

Researchers from Universities of Montreal, Canada and de Yaoundé Cameroun analysed whether cashew extracts could improve the body's response to its own insulin, reports Molecular Nutrition and Food Research.

"Of all the extracts tested, only cashew seed extract significantly stimulated blood sugar absorption by muscle cells," a release quoted study author Pierre S. Haddad as saying.

Haddad, professor of pharmacology at the University of Montreal's Faculty of Medicine, said: "Cashew seed extract contains active compounds, which can have potential anti-diabetic properties."

As India and UAE work out an agreement for prisoner exchange, Indians serving sentences in Dubai jails appear wary of the prospect of completing their terms in prisons at home, with some describing the detention centres in India as "hell".

Many Indian prisoners here in fact dread the prospect and are not keen to return home for the remaining period of incarceration, a media report said.

Several Indian prisoners in Dubai, who may be given a chance to serve their remaining prison terms back in India, say they are wary of going home because prisons back home are like "hell," it said.

Vinayak, a 76-year-old prisoner in jail on drug charges, told Gulf News he does not want to go to India to serve his remaining term.

Iranian scientist received $ 5 million from the CIA : Reports

Washington: An Iranian nuclear scientist, who claimed that he was abducted by US spies last year, was paid $ 5 million by CIA to provide intelligence on Tehran's nuclear programme, but may not be able to use the money in his country, a media report said on Thursday.

However, Shahram Amiri, who returned home to a hero's welcome, would find it hard to access the money as he has gone back to Iran which is under UN sanctions, an unnamed official was quoted as saying by 'The Washington Post'.

"Shahram Amiri is not obligated to return the money but might be unable to access it after breaking off what US officials described as significant cooperation with the CIA and abruptly returning to Iran," the report said.

Citing officials, it said he might have left out of concern that the Iranian government would harm his family.

"With this India will join an elite group of countries which have a distinct currency symbol. It denotes the robustness of Indian economy. I will now hold up the design that was finally selected. This was sent in by Udaya Kumar," said Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ambika Soni in New Delhi.

(BBC) -A Oxford University team will use adult stem cells, which have the ability to become any cell in the human body - to examine the neurological condition.

Skin cells will be used to grow the brain neurons that die in Parkinson's, a conference will hear.

The research will not involve the destruction of human embryos.

Induced pluripotent stem (IPS) cells were developed in 2007.

At the time, scientists said it had the potential to offer many of the advantages of embryonic stem cells without any of the ethical downsides.

US government charges Bradley Manning for leaking Classified Info to Wikileaks

Serviceman Bradley Manning, 22, faces two charges related to the illegal transfer and transmission of classified information from a US military network.

The US said he was suspected of downloading from SIPR Net.

He reportedly then passed on the data, including army videos and diplomatic messages, to the WikiLeaks website.

WikiLeaks has repeatedly said it does not have the confidential messages and the site itself is not mentioned in the charges against Private First Class (Pfc) Manning.

Patna-born child prodigy Dr Tathagat Tulsi has taken up a job as professor at Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay at the age of 22. Tulsi is possibly the youngest Assistant Professor at IIT. He will join the IIT faculty at Powai in Mumbai next week and teach Physics.

IIT Bombay sent his appointment letter sent on June 30 in which IIT Bombay Director Professor Devang V Khakar informed Tulsi that the institute's Board of Governors had offered him assistant professorship on contract at the Department of Physics.

He had finished high school at the age of nine, earned his BSc degree at 10, and MSc degree at 12 and then received his Doctorate in Quantum Computing from the Indian Institute of Science at the age of 21.

The Bihar boy has already turned down an offer from Waterloo University in Canada despite a lucrative pay package.

New insulin form may keep sugar low in diabetics for 3 months .

Indian scientists having discovered a novel form of the hormone that can keep blood glucose levels down for upto three months.

A team of scientists of the National Immunology Institute of India, led by Mr Avdesh Surolia, has developed a fresh approach to insulin injection wherein 'Supramolecular Insulin Assembly-II (SIA-II)', a form of the hormone, is used for a sustained treatment of diabetes mellitus type-I.

The studies constitute the first work of its kind where a single administration of SIA-II to animal models of diabetes, such as rats, has been experimentally demonstrated to lower blood glucose levels to normal values for as many as for 120 days.

SIA-II, which is in the form of a prodrug, when injected releases just above basal levels of insulin into the blood in a sustained manner, Mr Surolia said.

Danny Pier, a 25 year-old self-proclaimed computer nerd who turned to Kickstarter to raise funds to get an Android  smartphone into space. The project is named as 'Astdroid'

Pier believes that he can outfit a weather ballon with an HTC Evo, and use its camera, transmitter, computing power and GPS technology to track the phone’s journey into space.
