(PTI) A new study from the Pew Internet and American Life Project says the number of social networking users aged 50 and older nearly doubled in the past year, continuing a trend of strong growth that was first spotted last year.
In fact, for adults between 50 and 64 years, the use of social networking sites have jumped by 88 per cent in the past year, the study found. For those aged 65 and older, it has doubled.
The younger generation, however, still remains the biggest users of Facebook and other sites.

(AP) WikiLeaks moved its servers from the US to Sweden in 2007 to take advantage of laws protecting whistleblowers and a culture supportive of online mavericks.
This might be great news as we know that The Piratebay popular filesharing site also operate from the same land.
Swedish laws allow prosecutors to intervene against publication of material deemed harmful to national security.
It's unclear whether that could also include the security of a friendly nation. The US argues the secret documents risks the lives of coalition forces and Afghans helping them.

Google boss Eric Schmidt warns that one day young people may change their names in order to overcome what they had done in social networking world.
Mr Schmidt told the Wall Street Journal he feared they did not understand the consequences of having so much personal information about them online.
On his prediction that people may change their names, Mr Schmidt said: "I don't believe society understands what happens when everything is available, knowable and recorded by everyone all the time... I mean we really have to think about these things as a society."
However, Mr Schmidt said that Google would likely store more personal information about its users in the future.

(Associated Press)WikiLeaks will publish its remaining 15,000 Afghan war documents within a month, despite warnings from the U.S. government, the organization's founder said on Saturday.
The Pentagon has said that secret information will be even more damaging to security and risk more lives than WikiLeaks' initial release of some 76,000 war documents.
"This organization will not be threatened by the Pentagon or any other group," Julian Assange told reporters in Stockholm. "We proceed cautiously and safely with this material."
In an interview with The Associated Press, he said that if U.S. defense officials want to be seen as promoting democracy then they "must protect what the United States' founders considered to be their central value, which is freedom of the press."

Ron Bowes, a Canadian security consultant, used a piece of code to scan Facebook profiles, collecting data not hidden by users' privacy settings.
Mr Bowes told BBC News that he did it as part of his work on a security tool.
"I'm a developer for the Nmap Security Scanner and one of our recent tools is called Ncrack," he said.
"It is designed to test password policies of organisations by using brute force attacks; in other words, guessing every username and password combination."
By downloading the data from Facebook, and compiling a user's first initial and surname, he was able to make a list of the most common probable usernames to use in the tool.

www.example.com may not be available after a year later. The Internet will run out of Internet addresses in about 1 year's time, we were told today by John Curran, president and CEO of the American Registry for Internet Numbers (ARIN) which was also said by Vint Cerf, Google's Chief Internet Evangelist.
But here is the Good News :)
John Curran told NYTimes that large carriers like Verizon and Comcast have announced trial IPv6 activity. Curran also noted that new Internet of Things initiatives that use sensor networks, power grids, RFID and similar technologies, are being directed to use IPv6 and not IPv4.

Britain has said that it would not follow France in banning Muslim women from wearing 'burqa' in public as such a move would run contrary to the conventions of a "tolerant and respectful society".
The immigration minister, Mr Damian Green, told 'The Sunday Telegraph' that the move to ban women from wearing veils would be "rather un-British", despite a recent opinion poll showing widespread public support for such an action.
Claiming it would be "undesirable" for Parliament to vote on a burqa ban in Britain similar to that approved in France, he said: "Telling people what they can and can't wear, if they are just walking down the street, is rather un-British thing to do.

Twitter is exploring new business models.
The newest idea is special deals for Twitter users. The deals would be financed by companies that use the Twitter account @earlybird for advertising, reported Twitter on its website.
Deals will initially be almost exclusive to American markets. But, over time, it's possible that the deals could be expanded to other regions or focus on broader categories, like music or fashion.
Twitter, which lets users send messages up to 140 characters long, has grown rapidly to more than 12 million users. But the Californian start-up has had a hard time earning money. Plans for an advertising campaign met with sharp resistance from Twitter users.

Google has launched a new website to centralize its efforts to build an ultra high-speed fiber optic Internet network, better known as Google Fiber.
Earlier this year, Google announced its plan to build a high-speed network, delivering connection speeds 100 times faster than typical U.S. connections. The announcement produced a frenzy of interest: 600+ communities applied to become ground zero for Google’s experimental high-speed network. Topeka, Kansas even changed its name to Google, Kansas in order to win the contract.
The search giant is once again moving forward with its fiber network plans. It announced the launch of Google Fiber for Communities, a simple and straightforward homepage for the project, complete with videos, an FAQ, suggestions for how to take action, and a full list of the communities that have requested more information on Google Fiber.

Serviceman Bradley Manning, 22, faces two charges related to the illegal transfer and transmission of classified information from a US military network.
The US said he was suspected of downloading from SIPR Net.
He reportedly then passed on the data, including army videos and diplomatic messages, to the WikiLeaks website.
WikiLeaks has repeatedly said it does not have the confidential messages and the site itself is not mentioned in the charges against Private First Class (Pfc) Manning.

Year-over-year, Facebook’s traffic has nearly doubled, from 77 million unique U.S. visitors in June 2009. As a result, as you can see in the chart above, Facebook has blown past its social networking competition –- most notably MySpace and Twitter, both of which have shown little growth in the past year according to comScore.

A new tool examines the cursor behaviour of search-engine users to decide if they are shopping or merely surfing.
Eugene Agichtein and Qi Guo at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, has said that websites like Google commonly display sponsored results above the actual ones, which can be annoying for someone who's not shopping.
They created a web browser add-on that tracks the cursor, and found that the data could help to distinguish between a "browsing" and "shopping" search session over 96 per cent of the time.
"As the session progresses, our system would be able to make increasingly accurate predictions of intent," New Scientist quoted Agichtein as saying.
