Apple admits iPhone 4 reception issues, says fix is coming.

After initially dismissing the reports about the iPhone 4 antenna reception issue, Apple has officially admitted it exists, promising a software fix in a couple of weeks. There's a catch, though.

Apple's promised fix may not be good news for users experiencing the problem. Apple claims it has erroneously calculated the formula which displays signal bars on the iPhone, and therefore the iPhone has been showing too many bars in areas with weak signal strength.

Here's Apple's official announcement:

Dear iPhone 4 Users,

Documents leaked to BGR show Apple Knows About iPhone 4’s Flaws.

According to documents leaked to Boy Genius Report , AppleCare representatives are being given a strong company line to deliver to unhappy iPhone 4 owners who complain about reception issues.

Employees are told to say that the device’s reception performance “is the best we have ever shipped” and that its critical antenna flaws are “a fact of life in the wireless world.” They are told not to perform service on iPhones with these problems and instead to give customers a PR-driven recitative instead.

One law firm is even preparing for a class-action lawsuit against Apple and is soliciting iPhone 4 customers to contact them about reception issues.

Now, Apple Inc is Hiring iPhone/iPad Antenna Engineers.

The iPhone 4’s much-discussed reception and antenna issues just might spawn a class-action lawsuit.

Law firm Kershaw, Cutter & Ratinoff is issuing a call for disgruntled users as part of their investigations of “potential problems with the release of iPhone 4.”

The lawyers write, “If you recently purchased the new iPhone and have experienced poor reception quality, dropped calls and weak signals, we would like to hear from you.”

Last fall, the same firm Facebook, Zynga, MySpace, RockYou and others for advertising scams and allegedly unauthorized charges to users’ Mafia Wars and FarmVille accounts.

The iPhone 4 went on sale June 24. After taking this latest Apple gadget apart and identifying the components, iSuppli estimated the cost of the parts totals $187.51. That's more than the $170.80 iSuppli estimates for the cost of the materials inside the iPhone 3GS, Apple's last-generation smart phone.

The estimates don't include manufacturing, software, marketing and other costs.

The priciest part of the iPhone 4 is the new, higher-resolution LCD screen, which iSuppli estimates carries a cost of $28.50. Flash memory, which has been in short supply, costs $27. Apple's processor, which was manufactured by Samsung, according to iSuppli, costs $10.75, and the capacitive touch screen costs $10.

iPhone 4-antenna system is far from new. And possibly it is even so problematic that it will reduce the phone's performance, says leading experts when it comes to cellphone antennas, a professor Gert Frølund Pedersen from Aalborg University's Institute for Electronic Systems.

He is leading an international research team that recently got one million support from the Technology Foundation to develop a more effective mobile antenna, and has for many years studereret antenna technology on the mobile front.

Asked about Apple's iPhone presentation of four, he answered that the construction of the antenna as a part of the phone's frame is an old news that is seen many times before. Virtually all cell phone antennas on the market uses phone's metal parts such as antenna.

According to Oppenheimer’s Yair Reiner in a note to clients issued Friday, Apple sold 1.5 million phones on launch day.

We know that 600,000 units have been pre-ordered. Reiner estimates that 100,000 additional, non-reserved units were sold at Apple stores and that 50,000 were sold at Best Buy. He multiplied the final number by two to include international sales.

Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster has a more conservative calculation: He thinks that Apple will sell between 1 million and 1.5 million iPhones in the first three days, including pre-orders.

Apple admits iPhone 4 antenna issues

Since the iPhone 4 went on sale Thursday, numerous reports have begun to appear online about consumers having strange issues with the antenna. Namely, that if they put their hand over the new steel band that encases the iPhone, they lose reception.

Apple has responded with a statement:

"Gripping any mobile phone will result in some attenuation of its antenna performance, with certain places being worse than others depending on the placement of the antennas. This is a fact of life for every wireless phone. If you ever experience this on your iPhone 4, avoid gripping it in the lower left corner in a way that covers both sides of the black strip in the metal band, or simply use one of many available cases."

After lining up for hours, or some people for sometimes days, on Thursday morning started to get their hands on the iPhone 4 in the direct buy out at the Apple stores.

At a flagship Apple Store on Fifth Avenue in New York, more than 600 people had lined up to get a device that some were calling the "Jesus Phone," according to CNNMoney. Vuvuzelas trumpeted. Fans cheered.

When Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the new phone this month, he said the iPhone 4 is "the biggest leap we've taken since the original iPhone," which debuted in 2007.

Rent a Tent if you want to be the first to get an iPhone 4.

A clever guy making money for himself by cashing the hype of iPhone 4.

Chris Bank had secured the first spot in the iPhone 4 line, but he already has eight iPhones. So he decided to rent out his tent. For “just” $300, you can be the first person to get your hands on an iPhone from the San Francisco store.

While nobody has rented the tent yet, you’ve got to believe that some busy businessperson would be willing to pay a few hundred bucks to cut to the front of the line.

It might be no problem for him though if his tent is not rented, atleast he some publicity :D.

Complaints against new iPhone 4 are building up.

Multiple Apple- and gadget-focused websites are receiving reports that the iPhone’s much-discussed “Retina Display” is susceptible to a yellow discoloration, either as a thin line of yellow or as a circular tint.

Message board threads on Macrumors are buzzing with negative reviews of the discolored iPhone 4 screens. Here’s an excerpt from a community member:
