Scientists in Europe have shown that listening to music on headphones for an hour can have a temporary impact on people's hearing because of the damage caused to the hair cells in the outer ear.

Participants in the study had their hearing tested and were then asked to listen to pop or rock music for six one hour long sessions using two different types of headphones and at varying, preset volumes, The Daily Telegraph reported. After each session, the scientists measured the responses of the 21 men and women aged between 19 and 28 to a very short sound and then two sounds of different frequencies to see how clearly participants could hear the tones.

Mark Zuckerberg confirmed to press in London today that Facebook will indeed be launching location-based features in the near future.

According to reports, the young CEO told attendees at a local Facebook Developer Garage event, “We are finishing designing our application soon and hope to offer it soon.”

In March, The New York Times reported that location features would be launching in April. In May, Advertising Age said location would come to Facebook in June.

The TanDEM-X satellite has blasted into orbit on a mission to acquire the most precise 3D map of the Earth's surface.

The German radar spacecraft will fly in formation with an identical platform called TerraSAR-X launched in 2007.

Together, the pair will measure the variation in height across the globe to an accuracy of better than two metres.

Britain hospitals recruiting robots for their work routines.

A fleet of robots is being trained at the new Forth Valley Royal Hospital in Larbert, Stirlingshire, ahead of its opening in August. They will transport clinical waste and dirty linen, deliver food and dispense drugs.

Forth Valley, of the National Health Service, will be the first British hospital to use these robots, whose colleagues are already employed in hospitals in the US, France and Japan.

A dedicated network of corridors has been constructed beneath the hospital for the robots to move about. Their human colleagues can call them when needed using a hand-held personal digital assistant system. The robots will then make their way to a lift, collect or deliver and return to the lift.

UK-based mobile telecommunications company Orange and renewable energy resource community GotWind introduces a new accessory for mobile, wellies that charge your mobile phone while you walk in them.

The Orange Power Wellies have a “power generating sole” that converts heat generated from your feet into an electrical current that charges your mobile phone, which you can plug in at the top of your boot.

Twelve hours of walking will give your phone an extra hour of battery life.

The power in the sole is collected in a process called the “Seedbeck” effect. “Inside the power generating sole there are thermoelectric modules constructed of pairs of p-type and n-type semiconductor materials forming a thermocouple,” Orange detailed in a statement.

Google Releases Command-Line Tool for YouTube, Docs, and More

Google has launched a simple but very useful app for computer nerds everywhere: GoogleCL, a command-line tool that allows users to do everything from upload folders to Picasa to adding appointments to a Google Calendar.

Google CL is a Python (Python) application that makes Google Data API calls through the command line. A command-line interface (CLI) is an interface where the user can tell the computer to perform specific tasks by typing commands. You’ve probably seen them before, most likely via the MS-DOS command-line interface. The CLI is in contrast to the mouse-based interface that we all use today, known as the graphical user interface (GUI).

Googlers from the Street View team created the application for their own use, but have now turned GoogleCL over to the general public. It accepts commands to Google Calendar, Google Docs , Google Contacts, Picasa, YouTube , and Blogger . Here’s an example command:

             $ google calendar add “Social Media Day SF Party at 7pm”


Google has provide a list of sample scripts to get started, but we bet that page will expand with more commands and more supported Google services over time. It’s a great combination of the command line and the cloud. If you want to get started, you can download GoogleCL and the necessary Python library client here and here.

Tire makers say that fuel economy improvements of 4 to 8 percent over conventional tires are typical for these energy-saving designs. The low-rolling-resistance designs use silica-based mineral fillers, rather than just the standard carbon-black reinforcing fillers, to reduce friction.

the research laboratories at several tire makers are making progress toward reversing the trend of increased petroleum content. One of the first to pursue this path was Sumitomo Rubber Industries, which has a global alliance with Goodyear in the Dunlop brand, for the Enasave tire it introduced in Japan in 2006. Among other changes, Sumitomo engineers substantially reduced the amount of petrochemicals by cutting the amount of synthetic rubber in half, to 11 percent of the tire’s composition from about 22 percent.

An international team, led by Sydney University, has developed the optical integrator a fundamental building block equivalent to those used in multi-functional electronic circuits  on a CMOS compatible silicon chip.

According to the scientists, the device, a photonic chip compatible with electronic technology (CMOS), will be a key enabler of next generation fully integrated ultrafast optical data processing technologies for many applications including ultra fast optical information-processing, optical memory, measurement, computing systems, and real time differential equation computing units.

It is based on a passive micro-ring resonator and performs the time integral of an arbitrary optical waveform with a time resolution of a few picoseconds, corresponding to a processing speed of around 200 GHz, and with a “hold” time approaching a nanosecond.

A series of recent reports by Internet security companies found India has become the top spam-producing nation.

After tracking over 3 million spam messages for the week ending June 13, ICSA Labs found the maximum number, 424,224 — or 14 per cent — originated from India. The second biggest source was Russia with 11.5 per cent. While analysts have questioned the fact that China does not figure in that Top 10 list, there is consensus that India is, at the very least, among the top three nations spewing spam.

Similarly, according to the statistics featured by Project Honey Pot, the top country where spam servers are located is India, accounting for 16.9 per cent, with Brazil a distant second at 8.7 per cent. The share of countries where spam has traditionally been known to originate from, like China, has dropped, though that country still remains at Number One in Project Honey Pot’s all time list.

ICSA Labs is a US-based security firm with an anti-computer virus and spam product testing and certification facility. Project Honey Pot is a network that works with US law enforcement agencies, identifying spammers and spambots.

Grassroots Mapping, a project born out of MIT fellow Jeffrey Yoo Warren, is seeking to photograph and "map" the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Their project seeks to come up with cheap and easy to find tools for aerial photography.

Their newest project is using cameras attached to kites to photograph the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in order to assess the damage and help along the response to it.

The Gulf mapping project got under way on May 5th, and the project is now accepting donations to help fund its research.

A website that helps people to work out how much CO2 is being emitted to heat water in their homes has gone online.

Produced by the Energy Saving Trust (EST), it also suggests ways that users can save water and energy, as well as cutting their carbon footprint.

The Trust says CO2 from energy used to heat water in UK homes accounts for 5% of the nation's total carbon emissions.

Yet, it adds, water use is the "forgotten energy saving opportunity" by homes, businesses and policymakers.

The EST produced the calculator as an interactive, "easy to understand" tool for people to make the link between water efficiency and energy efficiency, explained Andrew Tucker, EST's water strategy manager.

Energy used in the UK water sector accounts for about 6% of the nation's total CO2 emissions, 89% of which is a result of homes and businesses heating the water.

Figures from the Trust estimate that heating water accounts for about 30% of the average household's energy bills.

YouTube Launches New Video Editor Tool.

YouTube has just released a new video editor that lets you create video mashups and edit down clips from your library of existing video uploads. The feature should be rolled out to all YouTube users by the end of the day.

The new service enables you to edit together separate clips, as well as add or change the background music using YouTube’s commercial AudioSwap library of licensed songs. As of right now, the service and its features are pretty basic, but could prove valuable for users that either want to create longer montages or playlists, or do basic editing jobs.

Japanese scientists unveil baby robot.

A Tokyo University team has developed a robot designed to simulate the development and behaviour of a nine-month-old baby in an effort to better understand how humans grow.

The robot was created by the team led by Yasuo Kuniyoshi, a professor at the Tokyo University. Professor Kuniyoshi plans to study the data acquired from the sensors and cameras attached to the robot to find out how a baby reacts to the environment and the process by which it develops curiosity about new objects.
