US Navy successfully test fires it's futuristic canon. On Dec 10, US Navy announced successful test firing of an electromagnetic cannon capable of firing a projectile 200 kms at five times the speed of sound.
This was tested at the Navy's Dahlgren Surface Warfare Center in Virginia.
This futuristic weapon uses powerful physical shock of electric current to propel a non-explosive slug along rails before launching it at very high velocities (2x+ speed of sound).
This EM canon was powered by a 33-megajoule , the most powerful ever attempted and three times that of the previous one.
The prototype has a little resemblance to a gun. Instead, thick cables are used.
