According to the research carried out by US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the University of Colorado’s Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES), the reason for non availabilty of fresh air in Los Angeles during night may be its high-fly, flash lifestyle of the building.
Chemical element nitrate radical (NO3++) helps in breaking the pollutants in the air but due to sunlight it is destroyed, similar thing happens during night, but instead of sun, the city light which is 10,000 less bright than than sunlight does have similar impact on the city's lower atmosphere.
The study was based on measurements taken from aircraft flying over the city at night.
