In a new study conducted by researchers from UC San Francisco find that smoking hookah is no good from smoking cigarette. The researchers came to this conclusion by studying and measuring the chemical in the urine and blood sample of hookah smokers contains a different, but still harmful mix of toxins.

UCSF research chemist Peyton Jacob III, PhD, and UCSF tobacco researcher Neal Benowitz, MD, both based at San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, said hookah use exposes smokers to higher levels of carbon monoxide, especially hazardous to those with heart or respiratory conditions, and to higher levels of benzene, long associated with leukemia risk.

Scientist claims to developed an app which can detect cancer.

Team of Scientists from Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, with the help of app developers claims to have developed a smart phone app which they say can detect cancer more accurately than the normal techniques generally followed in today's hospitals.

Doctors says, It takes an hour to make the diagnosis.

The researchers found that in initial tests, the device was 88 per cent accurate in distinguishing cancerous stomach tumours from benign growths.

Camel milk and urine to cure cancer?

Researchers from Arab Science and Technology Foundation, claims to have made a scientific breakthrough which was started back in early 2008, by developing a medical formula for treating cancer using camel's milk and urine.

The scientist says that the received positive result by testing on mice and soon to be tested on humans.

'Instant cancer' may be caused due to cell explosions.

Scientists from U.K claims to know the cause of surprise cancer or also know as 'Instant Cancer'.

This finding from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in the UK contradicts the long-held theory that thousands of mutations over a lifetime cause cancer.

This study also helps explain why some people are diagnosed with cancer only months after x-rays or other tests fail to detect traces of the disease, the journal Cell reports.

31 US cities tap water is said to be contained with Hexavalent chromium, a cancer causing chemical.

According to US national survey, The Environmental Working Group, 31 US cities get the tap water which is said to contaminated by a cancer causing chemical, Hexavalent chromium.

Their results on this study were released on Monday, Dec 20. They found that highest concentrations of hexavalent chromium, also known as chromium 6, in the drinking water in Norman, Okla., Honolulu and Riverside, California.

Electric Shocks to the rescue of Tumour patients.

A painful but effective way of treating tumor is found out by a team of researchers. By this method, using a device electric shock is given to the tumor which becomes softens before chemotherapy.

Due to electric shocks, cancer cells become porous so that more of the toxic drugs attack the tumor than healthy cells.

Vaccine found to fight against Brain tumor.

Researcher found out a new experimental vaccine that drastically helps in extending the life of patients with the most deadly type of brain tumor, glioblastoma (GBM), according to a small-scale US study published on Monday.

This vaccine is designed to targets a aggressive cancer gene called EGFRvIII that fuels glioblastomas, researchers said.

In their study of 18 patients, survival rate was extended from an expected 15 months to 26 months.

The study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology also said the vaccinated patients benefited from a longer “progression-free survival period, 14.2 months, compared to 6.3 months for those who did not receive the vaccine.”

Therapy for cancer weight loss is on the way...........

(PTI)Scientists claim to be developing a treatment for cancer cachexia, the debilitating weight loss and muscle wasting condition affecting patients with cancer.

Cancer cachexia has a major impact on quality of life for cancer patients. It can also inhibit the effectiveness of cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and radiotherapy. There is currently no effective treatment.

Now, an international team, led by Deakin University, is working on a combination of two readily available therapies (an omega3 fatty acid and an anti-gout medication) it believes could delay the onset of cancer cachexia and also improve quality of life for cancer patients.

Scientists pinpoint top eight cancer signs

(PTI)Researchers at the Keele University in UK also suggested the age at which patients should be most concerned by the symptoms, which include blood in urine and anaemia.

The other symptoms they highlighted included rectal blood, coughing up blood, breast lump or mass, difficulty swallowing, post-menopause bleeding and abnormal prostate tests, the BBC reported.

The scientists, who examined 25 previous studies for their research, found that the symptoms gave a one in 20 or higher chance of turning out to be cancer.

Although this still represents a relatively low chance of anyone with the symptom having the disease, they said that any suspicion of cancer can mean that the patient is sent for tests more quickly, in order to catch the disease as early as possible.

Peony flowers may ease ill-effects of chemotherapy

(IANS) A perennial favourite of gardeners, peony flowers may soon help ease chemotherapy's side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, stomach cramps and weight loss.

Given in combination with three other plants, it also cuts tumour growth, suggests a new research from the Yale School of Medicine, US, the Daily Mail reported.

Chemotherapy works by killing cells that grow and divide abnormally fast, a characteristic of cancers, according to the journal Science Translational Medicine.

Bug named Salmonella can help fight cancer

(PTI) Scientists have discovered a new weapon in their fight against cancer — salmonella, a bacteria found in all cold- and warm-blooded animals including humans.

Researchers at the University of Milan found that treating tumours with the bacteria can induce an immune response that effectively kills cancerous cells and also vaccinates against their further growth.

Cancer cells are especially dangerous because they evade the body's immune system that usually tracks down and kills any abnormalities.

Treating these cells with salmonella, the researchers said, effectively makes them "visible" to the body's immune cells and therefore open to attack, the Telegraph reported.

New Method to treat lung cancer

(Deccan Chronicle) That lung cancer is potentially fatal if left untreated is a well known fact. But the major problem in treating it through radiation is the constant movement of the organ as it is difficult to target the tumour. There are chances of healthy parts being hit by the radiation.

Thus far in India, the best procedure to treat lung cancer has been surgery. But, as we all know any surgical intervention is not without complications and suffering. With advancement in technology, lung cancer patients in India can have access to what is called 4D-Gated Stereotactic Body Radiosurgery.

Recently, using this technology we have treated a 65-year-old man with inoperable lung cancer. He is the first in India to receive 4-Dimensional Gated Stereotactic Body Radiosurgery using RapidArc technology.

New pills shrink cancer tumours by half .

cientists at a British laboratory have developed two pills which can halt the spread of skin cancer by shrinking deadly tumours by half.

Scientists at the GlaxoSmithKline drugs firm say the pills - which could be available within three years - will improve the length and quality of life for those with malignant melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, the Daily Mail reported.

Malignant melanoma is the "most quickly rising" cancer in Britain, with around 10,000 new cases and 2,000 deaths each year. Rates have doubled in the last two decades, because of excessive tanning by British people on holidays to hot countries.

Saliva could hold clue to Cancer Cure

Scientists have developed a revolutionary saliva test that could hold the clue to a cure for cancer.

According to the researchers, the test could be used for widespread early screening even before symptoms show, potentially saving millions of lives.

“The ability to implement safe, cost-effective, widespread screening could be the answer to saving thousands of lives each year and that is what we are after. Our objective is to revolutionise the diagnosis and treatment of cancer in the future,” the Daily Express quoted lead author David Wong, professor of dentistry at the University of California, as saying.

Gas bubbles to treat Cancer.

Researchers have found a novel technique of destroying cancer cells in the body by injecting exploding gas bubbles into the blood stream.

The research team from Leeds University developed the technique that uses microscopic gas bubbles to carry chemotherapy drugs to tumours, where the drugs can target the cancer cells.

Each of the tiny bubbles, which are less than a tenth of the width of a human hair, can be specifically targeted towards cancer cells so that they clump around the tumour.

Cell Phone Towers Not a Cancer Risk for Kids

Mobile phone base station towers boost cell reception, not childhood cancer risk, a British study has shown.

Children whose mothers lived near a high-output cell phone antenna mast while pregnant were no more likely to develop childhood cancer than those who lived farther away, found Paul Elliott of Imperial College London and colleagues. The researchers reported their findings online in the British Medical Journal.

"The risks are dwarfed by the well known dangers of distraction while using mobile phones, especially when driving-even when using hands-free equipment," he wrote in the editorial.

But because of the high levels of public concern, Elliott's group conducted a study looking at all 1,397 cases of central nervous system cancer, leukemia, and non- Hodgkin's lymphomas in children up to age 4 years in the U.K. national cancer registry from 1999 to 2001.

No link to child cancer from phone masts, finds study

Pregnant women who live close to mobile phone masts do not need to move house, scientists said today, following the publication of a study which found no link to early childhood cancers.

There has been public concern over the possibility that living near phone masts could raise the cancer risk of small children and clusters of cases around masts have been reported. But a study published in the British Medical Journal – the first to examine possible links between phone masts and childhood cancer across Britain – found no cause for concern.

Researchers from Imperial College London identified 1,397 children under five who were diagnosed with leukaemia or a tumour of the brain or central nervous system between 1999 and 2001. They compared each child with four children of the same gender who were born on the same day but had not developed cancer.

Drug for bowel cancer can treat eye disease.

A cheap, unlicensed drug originally produced for bowel cancer can treat an eye condition called age-related macular degeneration (AMD), new research has revealed.

Researchers based at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London have found the drug, Bevacizumab (brand name Avastin) working better than alternative treatments.

However, the study's shortcoming is that it does not directly compare Bevacizumab with Ranibizumab, its main rival, The Guardian said in a report.

AMD is the leading cause of vision loss. It does not cause blindness, but over time it damages the middle of your vision, making it hard to see things that are straight in front of you.

Cancer link to common heart drugs.

A class of drugs commonly used to treat heart problems has been linked with a "modestly" increased risk of cancer.

Analysis of published data from all trials of angiotensin-receptor blockers (ARBs) found one extra case of cancer for every 105 patients treated.

The US researchers said the evidence from nine trials should prompt drug regulators to investigate.

But they advised people not to stop taking the drugs, but to see their doctors if concerned.

The results are published in The Lancet Oncology.

Mobile phones do not raise risk of brain tumours, say scientists

Biggest study ever into link between handset use and cancer finds no evidence they are connected, reports Steve Connor.

The largest and most detailed study yet into the health risks posed by mobile phones has failed to find a link between cellphones and brain cancer, although scientists said that they still cannot give categorical assurances that there are no risks attached to using the devices over long periods of time.

More than 10,000 people from 13 countries took part in the study, which compared mobile phone use among people with brain tumours with healthy "controls". It was the biggest such study by far, yet the researchers found no increase in the risk of getting either of two types of brain tumour – and even detected a slightly lower cancer risk among mobile phone users.
