Ousted HP CEO to get $40 million pay cheque

(Associated Press) Whatever Mark Hurd did that cost him his job as CEO of Hewlett-Packard, the world's largest technology company, it wasn't enough to cost him a payday that could top $40 million.

Meanwhile, with little still known about why an actress and HP contractor threatened Hurd with a sexual-harassment lawsuit, stockholders took a $9 billion hit Monday, and HP's 300,000 workers were left to wonder about its future.

HP insisted that the problems it uncovered with the CEO's behavior were limited to falsified expense reports for his dinners and other meetings with Jodie Fisher, who helped organize HP events from 2007 to 2009 and greeted executives at the gatherings.

War on terror costs US $ 1 trillion

The United States has spent more than $ 1 trillion on wars since the September 11, 2001, says a recently released Congressional report.

Adjusting for inflation, the outlays for conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere around the world make the "war on terrorism" second only to World War II that cost $ 4.1 trillion at today's prices, the report says.

The report "Cost of Major US Wars" by the Congressional Research Service attempts to compare war costs over a more than 230-year period-from the American Revolution to the current day-noting the difficulties associated with such a task.

Since the 9/11 terror attacks, the United States has spent an estimated $ 1.15 trillion. World War II cost $ 4.1 trillion when converted to current dollars, although the tab in the 1940s was $ 296 billion.

At last after much delay the India Government had approved a design, design by IITian which will represent Indian Currency in the world distinguishably as many of the currencies in the sub continent as called as rupees. Its a blend of the Devanagri 'Ra' and Roman 'R' .

The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the design, which includes both the Devnagiri 'Ra' and the Roman capital 'R' and has two parallel lines running at the top. The parallel lines symbolise the equal to sign.

"With this India will join an elite group of countries which have a distinct currency symbol. It denotes the robustness of Indian economy. I will now hold up the design that was finally selected. This was sent in by Udaya Kumar," said Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ambika Soni in New Delhi.

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett has donated $1.6bn (£1.05bn; 1.5bn euros) to the charitable foundation created by Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his wife Melinda.

In all, he donated shares worth $1.93bn to five foundations.

The rest went to foundations set up in the name of Mr Buffett's late wife, Susan, and their three children.

Mr Buffett, who owns the investment company Berkshire Hathaway, pledged in 2006 to give away 99% of his wealth.

This year's donation is higher than the figure of $1.5bn donated in 2009 because Berkshire Hathaway has improved its performance.

Paid-content system for publishers by Google may be coming by year-end

Google which had hinted for nearly a year now that it was working on building some sort of paid content system for publishers, is reportedly set to launch such a system by year-end. According to a report in the Italian newspaper La Repubblica, Google is now reaching out to publishers to get them to sign up for the system, which it is calling Newspass.

Google wouldn't confirm the La Repubblica report, saying "we don't pre-announce products and don't have anything to announce at this time." But the Newspass system - at least from the translation of the La Repubblica article - appears to have many elements of a paid content proposal Google made to the Newspaper Association of America last fall. Back then, Google said it was "uniquely positioned to help publishers create a scalable e-commerce system via our Checkout product and also enable users to find this content via search - even if it's behind a paywall."

Scientists prove even the thought of money spoils enjoyment.

(PhysOrg.com) -- The idea that money does not buy happiness has been around for centuries, but now scientists have proven for the first time that even the thought of money reduces satisfaction in the simple pleasures of life.

In the study led by Jordi Quoidbach of the University of Liege in Belgium, over 350 adult volunteers were recruited. The subjects were university workers with jobs ranging from cleaners to senior positions. They were given questionnaires asking them about how much they earned, how much they saved, their attitudes to money, and measuring their savoring ability. Savoring is feeling positive emotions such as contentment, gratitude, joy, awe or excitement during an experience.

The results showed that the subjects who were wealthier had a self-assessed lower level of savoring ability, and this undermined the positive effects of money on their happiness, although they were overall slightly happier than the less well-off subjects.

Old mobile phones 'could be worth cash'.

A small poll of 853 people found 68% said they had kept one or more old phones that they did not use.

Government-backed Consumer Focus said that these phones could be sold, recycled or sent to charity.

But it warned users to wipe any personal data from the mobile before handing it over, by going to the "settings" menu on the phone.

"We discard millions of phones every year with one in 10 admitting they simply put their old handsets in the bin. These are sophisticated bits of kit that can still be used or recycled," said Hannah Bullivant of Consumer Focus.
