Nokia, the world's largest phone maker, will now outsource the work related to Symbian to Accenture as part of a plan to slash annual spending by 1 billion euros ($1.46 billion).

With the new Telecom Regulatory Authority of India's (TRAI) regulations, effective from March 1, 2011, we can hope some relief from the unwanted calls and SMSes.


Here are some of the proposals by TRAI:

Under the new guidelines consumers can choose their preference to receive or not to receive commercial communication from seven pre-defined categories. Users also have the option to either block all commercial calls and SMSes or to block only commercial calls while receiving SMSes of their choice.

Most of them tend to lose their mobile during nights out in pubs or clubs, a considerable proportion of the 7.3 million missing phones went missing on holidays.

It Official, India crossed 687.71 million mobile subscriptions

Before 30-sept 2010, India added 17.10 million mobile subscribers making the total number of mobile users to 687.71 million according to official data.

According to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, the wireless phone user base grew 2.55 percent to 687.71 million in September, from 670.60 million in the previous month.

With this, the total telephone subscriber base in the country, both wireless and wireline, touched 723.28 million. The total telephone density reached 60.99 percent.

Ofcom's chief executive Ed Richards has announced timetable at the FT World Telecoms Conference, which will pave the way for next-generation mobile services in the UK.

The auctioning of 4G spectrum will be done in the first half of 2012, according to Mr Richards. Which means the spectrum will become available from late 2012 or early 2013.

Mobile number portability from October 31

(IANS) The telecom regulator said on Thursday that mobile number portability (MNP) will be implemented nationwide from October 31, ruling out any further delay.

The MNP is a service that allows a mobile user to change his operator while retaining the number.

"There will be no further delay in the implementation of MNP," Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) Chairman JS Sarma said in New Delhi.

The Department of Telecom (DoT) had said on Wednesday that the operators must ensure that all inter-operator tests for porting the numbers from one service provider to another are completed before September 1, 2010.

Mobiles have 18x more bacteria than toilet handle.

The average mobile phone carries 18 times more potentially harmful germs than a flush handle in a men's toilet, tests have revealed.

One of the phones in the test had such high levels of bacteria that it could have given its owner a serious stomach upset.

The findings from a sample of dozens of phones by Which? magazine suggest 14.7 million of the 63 million mobiles in use in Britain today could be potential health hazards, reports the Daily Mail.

Hygiene expert Jim Francis, who carried out the tests, said, "The levels of potentially harmful bacteria on one mobile were off the scale. That phone needs sterilising."

According to the reports of Wireless Intelligence, more than 1 Billion new connection were added in just one and half (18 months) year, which mean now there are more than five billion connections worldwide.

In many regions, penetration exceeds 100%, where there is more than one connection per person in the country.

"If you just take the UK in 1987, when the first mobile companies launched, an industry insider predicted a maximum of 10,000 phones.

Samsung favours Wimax tech for mobile broadband .

PTI: South Korean electronics and telecom firm Samsung on Wednesday said that it is in talks with operators for setting up their networks and indicated that most of them are likely to opt for Wimax technology for offering mobile broadband services.

Mobile operators are looking at two separate technologies for offering mobile broadband services. These are Wimax and Long Term Evolution (LTE).

Both Long Term Evolution Time Division Duplex (TD-LTE) and Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) are broadband wireless access (BWA) are similar but rival technologies.

According to documents leaked to Boy Genius Report , AppleCare representatives are being given a strong company line to deliver to unhappy iPhone 4 owners who complain about reception issues.

Employees are told to say that the device’s reception performance “is the best we have ever shipped” and that its critical antenna flaws are “a fact of life in the wireless world.” They are told not to perform service on iPhones with these problems and instead to give customers a PR-driven recitative instead.

One law firm is even preparing for a class-action lawsuit against Apple and is soliciting iPhone 4 customers to contact them about reception issues.

Microsoft Kin is set to be Stopped.

The Kin, two Microsoft-branded phones targeted at teenager users, is all set to be no longer available.

The Kin, formerly known as “Project Pink,” was revealed in April and lauched on the Verizon network in May. However, ominous signs emerged for the phone’s demise after Microsoft cut the price of the Kin in half.

Here is Microsoft’s official statement on the Kin:

“Microsoft has made the decision to focus on the Windows Phone 7 launch and will not ship KIN in Europe this fall as planned. Additionally, we are integrating our KIN team with the Windows Phone 7 team, incorporating valuable ideas and technologies from KIN into future Windows Phone releases. We will continue to work with Verizon in the U.S. to sell current KIN phones.”
