Marcin de Kaminski, a founder of Piratbyran, which means "piracy bureau" in English, told BBC News "we don't feel we are needed" any more.
But the group also decided to close following the death of a co-founder.
A spokesperson for the Swedish computer games industry said the decision showed "the discussion has moved on".
Piratbyran first emerged in 2003, as a response to the Swedish body Antipiratbyran (anti-piracy bureau), which works to counter the sharing of copyrighted materials on-line.

After shutting down by Hollywood companies which won the court battle (refer our previous post) the might piratebay was taken out of the cyberspace.But now less than 48 hours its back to business with a smiling cat photo. The mighty Piratebay is down.
A Pirate Bay source told TorrentFreak that it is already working on a backup solution to bring the site online; the servers themselves haven't been touched (or moved) rom their well-guarded - and highly secret - location; they simply need to be routed through another provider.
